The objective for introducing  the Universal banking concept was to allow all banks in the country that comply with the prescribed capital requirements the freedom to engage in some or all permissible banking business activities without restrictions. Global economic activity has broadly been modest and divergent across major regional blocks with growth rebound in some advanced economies. However, emerging market economies and especially commodity-exporting countries have come under strain on the back of reduced capital flows and declining commodity prices. This has resulted in sharp currency depreciations in most of these countries, thereby weakening their prospects for growth. Read more

The central bank has kick-started a process to revise the Banking Act to better govern the conduct of banking business in Ghana. The Bank recently submitted a final draft of the Banks and Specialized Deposit-taking Institutions Bill and the Deposit Protection Bill together with the accompanying Memoranda to the Minister of Finance. We hope that these bills would be approved by Cabinet shortly and proceed to the lawmakers. Read more
